Airedale Hockey Club
History of Airedale Hockey Club
The first known existence of Hockey was in the Nile Valley circa 2000BC but it didn’t reach the Aire Valley until about 4000 years later. Airedale Hockey club was formed in 1990 by a small group of players who had previously played together for the Airedale Hospital Mixed team which became Airedale Mixed Hockey Club In 1992, following the demise of the original Bingley Hockey Club which had existed since before world war one, Airedale men entered Yorkshire division 5. Two years later the first ladies team entered Yorkshire Division 6.The club has had great success over its first two decades. Originally playing home matches at Marley Sports centre in Keighley the mens team worked its way through the Yorkshire leagues reaching its high point in 1999 when it narrowly missed out on promotion to the Yorkshire Premier League. The Ladies have also worked their way up to a similar position in 2012 when they too were just one place off being promoted to the Yorkshire Premier league.
The club is now been based at Oakbank School in Keighley, and also has a successful men’s second team and a men’s development team as well as a thriving junior section. The club entered a ladies second team into the league in 2013. During its existence Airedale Hockey Club have accommodated players from around the world including Mexico, Germany, India and Pakistan. The most highly decorated player to play for the club is Gurdev Singh who Captained India and won Olympic Gold in Melbourne 1956 and a Gold in the Asian games of 1962. Gurdev confirmed the highlight of his hockey career was turning out for the Airedale Second team.
In addition to Mens and Ladies success the Mixed team also rose through the Yorkshire Leagues to ultimately win the Yorshire top division in 1994. The year before as a division 2 team Airedale mixed team won the Yorkshire cup and were knocked out of the National Mixed Trophy in the quarter finals after travelling down to London to play Battersea Park HC, only to be beaten by the toss of coin.
The Junior section entered the Yorkshire Youth League in 2006 and has now got teams at under 10, 12 and 14 age groups and several players representing West Yorkshire at age group level. 2012 saw our first JRPC (Yorkshire) representative being selected. The teams have thrived and Airedale HC under 10 boys won the Yorkshire League in 2011. The under 12 boys of 2011 took the Yorkshire League title and in 2012 added the Yorkshire and North of England Mini titles, then going to the national finals at Cannock Hockey club to finish a creditable 5th in England beating three of the biggest clubs in the country on the way. They are officially known in the club as the Legends.
